LOCATION: MANNAR, SRI LANKA
DATE: DECEMBER ONWARDS (4-12 WEEKS PLACEMENT)
Teach English and support the foundational years of Tamil children in Sri Lanka’s conflict-affected Northern Province!
We are calling on native English speakers to assist our fantastic local partner in improving children’s academic performance in a community where education performance is acutely low. We need volunteers to assist them in raising teaching standards by increasing English language skills. Volunteers will work in Hub Centres that offer over five hundred students a relaxed and open space to gain English language skills.
What will you get out of it?
You will be delivering training workshops and organise exposure visits. Besides improving students’ level of education, this will be a fantastic opportunity for you to build on your own communication skills and boost confidence by working closely with a dynamic and dedicated local team.
This will be an immersive experience where you will experience first-hand the challenges facing some of the most marginalised communities within Sri Lanka – a country that otherwise has high rates of primary and secondary education achievement. It is also a stunning country so you will never run out of places to explore!
If you are willing to go out of your comfort zone, up for a challenge and want to contribute towards positive change while learning new skills, forging friendships and exploring a new culture then get in touch!
Successful applicants must be prepared to live and work in very basic conditions with limited access to running water, electricity and wifi.
A fundraising commitment for charity is required. Successful applicants will be assigned a fundraising mentor who is on hand to answer any questions or queries you may have as well as providing ideas, advice and support to help you reach your target.
Once in country there is a fixed daily cost covering accommodation and any work related travel. A more detailed breakdown of costs and expenses will be provided for those applicants selected for an interview.
